Gamma Sigma Sigma Woman of the Year 2017

Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, Inc. is pleased to announce its 2017 Woman of the Year, Viney Mosley, who is the president and co-founder of Levi’s Children’s Charity located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

With the sudden death of Levi, her three-year-old grandson, Mosley was inspired to co-found Levi’s Children’s Charity. Levi’s Children’s Charity is a charitable-giving organization supporting projects and efforts restoring hope, happiness and health to children and families. Levi’s Children’s Charity also established fundraising opportunities to build an accessible outdoor nature inspired playground called Levi’s Adventure Trail. For more information visit www.levisadventuretrail.com.

Another key component of Mosley’s focus that the sorority hopes to support is to increase awareness of the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC). The SUDC Foundation’s goal is to prevent this unspeakable tragedy by funding research to hopefully allow future generations of children and parents a preventative cure. By endorsing the efforts of the SUDC Foundation, Viney hopes to promote public knowledge during the national SUDC Awareness Month in March 2017.

Gamma Sigma Sigma recognizes a woman of local or national prominence who has made a difference in her community during the year of its national convention. The Woman of the Year is someone that has worked to improve the community around her by either creating a program or working over and above within a program to make a difference in either her local community or the national landscape.

Mosley will be recognized July 7-8, 2017 at Gamma Sigma Sigma’s National Convention in Pittsburgh, PA. With this award, the organization will bestow National Honorary Membership to Mosley and provide a minimum $2,000 donation to Levi’s Children’s Charity.

Happy Holidays from Gamma Sigma Sigma!

Greetings sisters,

The winter holiday season is upon us!  I cannot believe that the biennium is almost over.  The previous year has been such a great experience of learning, growing, and collaboration for myself and I would like to thank all the members for that.  I have had the pleasure of meeting members at conferences, working with members on committees, and sharing knowledge with collegiate and alumni members.  As I reflect on the last year, I find myself feeling truly blessed.

For the last 6 months of the biennium, I have such great hopes for our organization.  I would love to see us grow and foster leadership, traverse new boundaries, and serve communities with unique and special service projects.  Even though this is a busy time of year, my hope is that everyone will be able to take a minute and enjoy their family and friends.  Cannot wait to see everyone in 2017!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Gentry, National President

Let’s Talk Service Update

Happy December Gamma Sigma Sigma members,

I am glad to send you this important update before the end of the year. If you are receiving this email, then you added your contact information to receive an update from me with service reminders, resources and happenings across the country. If you are changing service contacts for your chapter/colony this December, please update your information using the following link: http://bit.ly/servicef16. This postincludes funding opportunities, award nomination reminders, the service report form, and what to look for in 2017.

Service Assistance Program

There is Service Assistance Program funding available to support at least 15 more service activities this biennium. You can continue to submit applications between now and April 1. I will review them as they come in, and you can expect to hear a decision within 2-3 weeks (excluding holiday break). I am attaching the form for anyone having issues downloading the form online.  Please keep in mind funding can be requested only for Project IMPACT projects for the following:
  • Supplies, materials, and publicity for events that benefit a nonprofit or charitable cause.
  • Travel expenses to volunteer with a charitable organization.
  • Supplies, materials, or publicity to create awareness that benefits a nonprofit or charitable cause.
  • Supplies or materials needed to actively participate in a service endeavor that benefits a nonprofit or charitable cause.

Project IMPACT Nominations

The time is here to nominate a new Project IMPACT area.  The nomination form has been updated. It clarifies what we are looking for with nominations for next biennium. The deadline is February 15. You can download the form online at http://bit.ly/gssprojectimpact.

Distinguished Service Awards Nominations

Please be aware that the DSA nomination deadline is February 3. That is earlier than the other award deadlines. Details are explained in the nomination form. Remember the DSA winners will get $100 donated to the charity of their choice.  That form is available at http://gammasigmasigma.org/service/service-awards/.

Service Merit Award nominations

This is the largest showcase of the outstanding service happening in Gamma Sigma Sigma to other members. By submitting your nomination for the Service Merit Award you are agreeing to also share your project with members during the service fair/exhibit at convention. To make things more exciting, the winner of this award is recognized during a meal at convention. Be sure to submit your nomination (as many projects as you like) by February 15, 2017. You can find it online at http://gammasigmasigma.org/service/service-awards/.

Holiday Break

If you have any questions, please let me know. Please note that the NBD will be on holiday break from December 23-January 3, 2017.

Look for in 2017

I want to particularly pull out National Volunteer Week in 2017. During the week of April 23-29, 2017. We ask that you recognize a campus or community member(s) for their service. This may be through a recognition banquet, event, or thank you cards. You are welcome to be as creative as you want. This will also be the week that we do a big push to celebrate the Woman of the Year.
Unity In Service,
Aurelia Spaulding
National Service Director
